چکیده

Gas in galactic disks is collected by gravitational instabilities into giant atomic-molecular complexes, but only the inner, molecular parts of these structures are able to collapse to form stars. Determining what controls the ratio of atomic to molecular hydrogen in complexes is therefore a significant problem in star formation and galactic evolution. In this paper we use the model of H2 formation, dissociation, and shielding developed in the previous paper in this series to make theoretical predictions for atomic to molecular ratios as a function of galactic properties. We find that the molecular fraction in a galaxy is determined primarily by its column density and secondarily by its metallicity, and is to good approximation independent of the strength of the interstellar radiation field. We show that the column of atomic hydrogen required to shield a molecular region against dissociation is ∼ 10 M⊙ pc −2 at solar metallicity. We compare our model to data from recent surveys of the Milky Way and of nearby galaxies, and show that the both the primary dependence of molecular fraction on column density and the secondary dependence on metallicity that we predict are in good agreement with observed galaxy properties. The Cosmic Evolution of Atomic and Molecular Hydrogen in Galaxies

Neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) and molecular hydrogen (H2) play a primordial role in the cosmic evolution of galaxies. However, little is known about the co-evolution of these two gas phases. This discrepancy and the design of future telescopes like the SKA and ALMA require theoretical models of the joint evolution of HI and H2 in galaxies. This thesis starts with a phenomenological analysis of t...

Spiral Molecular Front in Galaxies: Quick Transition from Atomic to Molecular Hydrogen in Spiral Arms

We derived a two-dimensional map of the molecular fraction, fmol, (ratio of the molecular gas density to that of total gas) in the spiral galaxy M51, and examined the behavior of molecular fronts (MF), where MF represents the place where fmol changes drastically from nearly zero to unity and vice versa. We show that the MF phenomenon occurs not only radial, but also in the azimuth direction thr...

The Molecular Front in Galaxies Ii : Galactic-scale Gas Phase Transition of Hi and H 2

We have examined the distribution of HI and H2 gases in four face-on galaxies by using the observed data of CO and HI line emissions from the literatures. We demonstrate that the gas phase transition of HI and H2 occurs suddenly within a narrow range of radius, which we call the molecular front. We have tried to explain such phase transition in galactic scale with a help of the phase transition...

The Evolution of the Ism in the Mildly Disturbed Spiral Galaxy Ngc 4647

We present matched-resolution maps of HI and CO emission in the Virgo Cluster spiral NGC 4647. The galaxy shows a mild kinematic disturbance in which one side of the rotation curve flattens but the other side continues to rise. This kinematic asymmetry is coupled with a dramatic asymmetry in the molecular gas distribution but not in the atomic gas. An analysis of the gas column densities and th...

Compactness of Cold Gas in High-Redshift Galaxies

Galaxies in the early Universe were more compact and contained more molecular gas than today. In this paper, we revisit the relation between these empirical findings, and we quantitatively predict the cosmic evolution of the surface densities of atomic (HI) and molecular (H2) hydrogen in regular galaxies. Our method uses a pressure-based model for the H2/HI-ratio of the Interstellar Medium, app...
